Similar to Field Target (FT), Hunter Field Target (HFT) is a discipline of shooting targets outdoors in a woodland or open field as opposed to the popular indoor 10 and 25m disciplines yet becoming more suitable to those familiar with Hunting rather than Target Shooting.

HFT is typically shot in the prone position, which distinguishes it from its sister discipline of Field Target. Additional standing and kneeling positions are used on some lanes.

The targets are of the metal knockdown variety and within the silhouette is a disc, referred to as the “hit zone”. Hit the disc and the Shooter receives 1 point. For FT three standard diameters of hit zones are used on the targets, 15mm, 25mm, and the other being 40-45mm which is full size. The targets are placed between ranges of 8 yards to 55 yards, and can be on the ground or elevated within trees.

The range of the target is not known to the shooter, and shooters use techniques to determine the range, but unlike FT they are not allowed to adjust the scope in any way, including dialing, so in addition to windage the shooter must use the correct amount of elevation adjustment known as holdover.

A Rifle Scope that is light, has good magnification with a reliable parallax is key in HFT.
